Since being founded in 1996 by dental surgeon Dr Anthony Lovat, OPRO has been manufacturing custom-fit mouthguards at its headquarters in Hertfordshire. During this time users of OPRO have included the England, Wales and Scotland rugby teams, Great Britain hockey, all twelve Guinness Premiership Clubs, the ABA as well as hundreds of thousands of individuals seeking the ultimate protection available against oral facial injury and concussion. It is now commonplace to see most of the professional rugby and hockey players in the UK wearing OPRO branded mouthguards.

Despite the proven benefits of using a custom fit mouthguard, the disadvantage of this product to many consumers is the cost - each mouthguard is manufactured by hand hence costs are high compared to mass produced boil and bite type mouthguards. With this in mind OPRO began researching alternatives available to the consumer in the traditional ‘boil & bite' market with a view to identifying how, using its vast experience, an improved product could be designed.

After a number of years of development, the OPROshield was finally launched in 2007. Initially the range consisted of 3 models, the BRONZE, SILVER & GOLD, though this was soon increased (due to demand) to include the ORTHO and JUNIOR models and is now stocked by the majority of sports stores within the independent sector.

The primary quality of a good mouthguard is its ability to stay in place and resist displacement. Experimentation over a number of years led OPRO to develop a finned system called the OPROfin which, when coupled with a uniquely developed blend of materials, gave the wearer excellent standards of retention. The OPROfins, which break down and mould to the teeth during the fitting process, quite simply give OPROshield the best retention of any self-fit mouthguard in the market. It is also the first self-fit mouthguard range in the world to obtain full CE Type Certification following independent verification by SGS UK. All of this, combined with the inclusion of an audio/visual cd of fitting instructions, result in OPRO having a unique offering.
